Graphic designers may be easy to come by but being a great graphic designer can be more of a challenge. In this Blog i am going to discus about what should you follow or do to become a good Graphic Designer. There are some key qualities you need to acquire to become great graphic designer.
A graphic designer has to be curious to know and learn new things. There’s always something new to learn in graphic designing. To become an expert in this profession, designers should be able to look beyond the surface of things. They should be motivated to try out new things; things that haven’t been tried earlier. They should ask questions in curiosity and discover new aspects of designingA great graphic designer must be imaginative and they must be able to apply that imagination into their work. Creative people don’t just follow the crowd and the latest trends, they find inspiration in everyday objects and even themselves.
Many great designers started out very humble. They became sponges and took it all in. They took notes and tried new things. They were receptive and grew because they listened to the people around them. There wasn’t an attitude of pride or arrogance, but a conscious decision to be humble, to be teachable.
Able to Take Criticism
Criticism is a tricky thing. As a designer, we must learn that when our work is under criticism there’s no need to take it personally. There’s no reason to get defensive and make up lame excuses. Be receptive and open-minded.
In graphic design, the word consistency often crops up, whether you are working with clients on a website design, creating posters or even flyers, it’s essential to keep your designs consistent following a brand’s identity. Using a brand’s color scheme, styles and fonts should be considered during all aspects of creation. A great designer will be able to incorporate a brand’s identity into all new inspiring design ideas and if a brand identity isn’t clear, a designer will be able to create one for them.
Out of the Comfort Zone
Ask any successful designer and they’ll tell you they were willing to learn and explore new design tricks. It’s hard! I get that. However, how will a designer ever grow or learn if they’re never pushed beyond their limits? Almost every day, I am confronted with a design problem and I think to myself, “OK, they never taught me this in school, what in the world am I supposed to do?”
Fear can get the best of us. It can cripple us. Get out of your comfort zone, learn and then just try.
In this day and age, it’s so easy to learn new tips and tricks. Take advantage of the vast knowledge that is out there. Listen to your colleagues around you and don’t let fear stop you from creating amazing things.
The best graphic designers are those who are able to convey the message of a brand effectively through their images, text, shapes, colors, lines, etc. The design cohesive should be able to deliver the message that you wish to impart loud and clear.
It’s not only about the design, but a great graphic designer should be able to communicate fluently. He/she should be able to interact with the clients properly, collaborate with the team, and his/her points should be well-articulated. Excellent interaction is important to keep the whole team in the loop along with the managers and unlock new ideas to succeed.
Designers, therefore, have to have good communication skills to present, charm, and negotiate for your work. They have to close deals and give clients updates about the project, building strong relationships with them. By having great communication, designers can ask insightful questions and offer thoughtful solutions.
The ability to generate many different ideas for the same project
A good designer should use their creativity to generate many different ideas for the same project. It’s one of the main reasons I love design. Every project has many solutions (this differs from certain types of mathematical problem for example, where there will be only one answer). The designer has a responsibility to explore these solutions with the client. Hence presenting a minimum of three design concepts. It’s critical to the success of any creative project as it puts the client in a position where they can make an informed decision about which direction the project should take
A good designer will be able to think in a way that enables them to come up with many different ideas. It’s what Edward de Bono calls lateral thinking.
For example, when starting a design project, let’s say a logo design, I will sit down with my sketch book and scribble down at least ten ideas of how the logo could work. I’ll then start developing them on my computer. Some will work very well, others will be problematic but will work with a bit of tweaking here and there, and others will turn out not to work at all. Of those that work, I will choose the best three to go into the client presentation.
It’s crucial to have at least ten ideas to start with. If you only start with five, for example, there’s a good chance that three of them won’t survive the development process and you won’t have enough workable ideas for your presentation.
The more ideas you scribble down, the more contenders you’ll have for that first presentation. More contenders means you will be better placed to choose the most effective design solutions.
There are many more skills and abilities that a good designer should have but I feel these Six are possibly the most important. I say this because the focus of all Six points is on effective design solutions. The overarching ability of any good designer should be that of producing effective design solutions that are beneficial to a client’s business.
